STELAR Takes Part in Recognizing World Food Safety Day
This 7 June, World Food Safety Day is being celebrated around the world. At STELAR, an EU-funded project, we’re taking part in highlighting the importance of food safety today, and each other day, as well.
Through the project, STELAR will provide a Knowledge Lake Management System (KLMS) that will interconnect different types of food safety data from various sources, eventually making them actionable.
The proposed platform will unify and simplify access to key risk assessment and prediction information.
The Need for Interconnecting Food Safety Data
Food safety is affected by multiple elements in the global supply chain, such as:
- Trading conditions
- Commodities pricing
- Historical regulatory issues
- Changes in regulations
- Food production
- Weather conditions
- Plant and animal diseases
- Climate change
Figuring out the correlation between these elements and linking them, as well as presenting them as AI-ready data, can give valuable insights into future food safety incidents. According to the World Health Organization, 1,600,00 people get sick due to unsafe food in just one day. Alarmingly, each day 340 children younger than five die due to preventable foodborne diseases.
At the moment, data is stored mostly in different formats and languages, resulting in subpar accessibility of valuable data. To perform a timely risk analysis, domain experts need to be able to spot and extract large volumes of data. On the other hand, food companies need a knowledge lake of data where they can find information fast to effectively streamline risk procedures.
STELAR’s Role in Food Safety the Agrifood Data Space
To combat the above-mentioned dour statistics, STELAR will demonstrate the usability of its KLMS and its ability to correlate different types of data through three use cases, one of them directly dealing with the subject of risk prevention in food supply lines.
STELAR’s proposed knowledge lake platform will provide food companies with a virtual place in which they can manage and view data related to risk prevention.
The KLMS will list details such as the type of hazard, type of product, traceability, and other information.
All this can help food companies streamline their own risk prevention procedures.
STELAR’s Wide-spanning Goals
STELAR’s pilot will deal with data important for multiple parts of the food value chain. From ensuring food safety through traceability, risk analysis and prevention, and fraud detection, all the way to reducing the environmental footprint – STELAR is readily tackling burning topics in the food safety sphere.
