Exploring Our Guest’s Motivation and Background in Smart Farming
Could you please share a bit about your professional background and what initially motivated you to work in the field of smart agriculture and robotics?
My name is Han Hilbrands. My family runs a dairy farm, and I’ve been involved there since I was young. I later studied agrotechnology and management at the Aeres University of Applied Sciences in Dronten. During my studies, I did internships where I was introduced to many types of smart technology, and I became especially interested in what’s possible with software today. Together with my classmate Jeroen, I started Smart Agri Technology to help bring these innovations into practice and make them useful for farmers.
Can you describe your current position at Smart Agri Technology? What does a typical day look like in your role?
I’m the owner of Smart Agri Technology, and my role is similar to that of a managing director. I work closely with my colleagues, and when needed, I also support work in the field. It’s a mix of planning, coordinating, and hands-on involvement.
From European Projects to Practical Implementation
How has your experience with European projects like Robs4Crops influenced your approach to integrating robotics and smart technologies in farming?
In Robs4Crops, I was responsible for managing the large-scale pilot on location. We organised the practical use of the robot in the field, based on what farmers actually needed. That experience helped us focus on making sure new technologies fit real-world conditions and daily farm work.
Real-World Barriers and the Need for Better Data
Smart Agri Technology is supporting farmers in using smart technologies to improve crop yield and make farming more sustainable. What are some of the main challenges you encounter when introducing these technologies on the ground?
Even when a new technology is ready, it doesn’t always work smoothly in every situation. For example, camera-based systems can struggle with the wide range of conditions in the field. Lighting, soil, and weather all affect performance. Setting up the machines can also be challenging, especially when conditions change from one location to another.
STELAR aims to improve data discovery, linking, and annotation for agrifood datasets, addressing challenges related to data volume, diversity, and quality. Given the issues with agrifood data being stored in different places and formats, how important are seamless data integration and AI-enabled search to advancing smart farming?
It’s exactly as you said – the data is everywhere, and there are big differences in quality, how it’s collected, and even file types. On top of that, various camera systems work in different ways. That’s why seamless data integration is so important. Without it, it’s hard to make sense of all the available information and to actually use it to support farm decisions.
What’s Next for Smart Agri Technology
Looking ahead, what developments do you anticipate will have the greatest impact on the use of data and technology in agriculture over the next five to ten years?
I believe we’ll make progress in standardising data, which will help farmers get better insights into their crops. That’s especially important as farms become larger. With clearer data, we can respond earlier and more precisely to problems like plant diseases or mould, which is essential for both yield and sustainability.
