A Very STELAR Recap of 2023
As we bring 2023 to a close, it’s the perfect time to reflect on the big finish of the year that STELAR had, and prepare for the even bigger year ahead.
From the start of our Pilots to successful workshops held, here’s our STELAR recap of the most recent months.
Advancements in Project Activities
In our previous newsletter in September, we announced the kick-off of pilot activities. The three Pilots in focus are from the domain of smart agriculture, and their data value chains will be improved by the STELAR Knowledge Lake Management System (KLMS) – a data management system fit for today’s agrifood needs. The KLMS will be validated through different real-world use cases.
In other project news, progress has been made in recent months related to setting up and integrating the core components of the KLMS and developing the KLMS tools, in particular:
- Developing Data Discovery tools, including a data catalog, which is accompanied with a data profiler and a data synopsis engine, and is enhanced with a Knowledge Graph that interlinks metadata about datasets, workflows and tasks.
- Developing Data Interlinking tools, which include tools such as pyJedAI for schema matching and entity linking and CorrelationDetective for discovering high-order correlations.
- Developing Data Annotation tools, which include tools for domain-specific named entity recognition and satellite data classification.
The Consortium Got Together in Eindhoven
The STELAR team, consisting of 9 organisations from 5 countries, gathered in October in Eindhoven to brainstorm the development of KLMS.
Key steps were taken, the most important one being the charting of the course for the first implementation steps of our Pilots.
Thank you again to our hosts and STELAR partner, Technical University of Eindhoven!

As we gear up for a year full of collaborations with other forward-minded organisations and individuals, we also remind ourselves of two notable joint achievements from recent months.
Putting STELAR on the Map
Workshop Held and Connections Made at Synergy Days
Synergy Days was held in October in Thessaloniki, Greece, offering numerous opportunities for connecting between EU AgTech projects.
STELAR was a standout due to its presentation in front of the entire conference, its booth, but also due to its “Novel Digital Infrastructure for Food Safety: Solutions for a Rapidly Changing World” workshop, organised with the HOLiFOOD project and exploring the intersection of artificial intelligence and food safety. Manos Karvounis, the Innovation Team Leader at Agroknow and a key member of the STELAR project consortium, led the expert discussion.

STELAR Webinar on Food Safety Benchmarking and other Events
This December, STELAR partner and leader of the project’s Pilot A, Agroknow, held a webinar on food safety benchmarking. Angela Ferhati, Key Account Manager at Agroknow, greeted Carmella H. Rashed, Global Director of Regulatory Affairs at Bimbo QSR, and Iraklis Posnakidis, Senior Lead Software Engineer at Agroknow.
Crucially, it was explored how food safety performance tools and metrics are vital for companies as they affect numerous factors.

Papers
Our consortium partners have been, as always, busy with research and innovation. Some of the papers they have published were:
- Self-configured Entity Resolution with pyJedAI, a vision paper presented at the 2023 IEEE International Conference on Big Data, featuring joint work by the University of Athens, Athena Research Center and Agroknow.
- Supervised Scheduling for Geospatial Interlinking, presented at the 31st ACM International Conference on Advances in Geographic Information Systems (SIGSPATIAL 2023), by the University of Athens.
- Pre-trained Embeddings for Entity Resolution, an experimental analysis paper, presented at the VLDB 2023 conference, featuring joint work by the University of Athens and Athena Research Center.
- TokenJoin: Efficient Filtering for Set Similarity Join with Maximum Weighted Bipartite Matching, presented at the VLDB 2023 conference, featuring joint work by Athena Research Center, Eindhoven University of Technology and the University of Athens.
- And synopses for all: A synopses data engine for extreme scale analytics-as-a-service, published at the Information Systems journal, by Athena Research Center.
